Icing Physics: From Fundamentals to Simulation, Testing, Detection, and Protection

Date: 30 March - 3 April 2026

Location: online / on-site: Waterloosesteenweg, 72, 1640 Sint-Genesius-Rode, Belgium - near Brussels

About the lecture series

The purpose of this hybrid Lecture Series (online/on-site) is to provide a comprehensive overview of icing physics and its applications in aeronautics and energy systems. The first part of the course will introduce and discuss the fundamental principles of icing physics, emphasizing the link between meteorological conditions, icing mechanisms, and certification requirements.

The second part will cover numerical simulation methods for ice accretion, icing wind tunnel testing, ice detection technologies, and ice protection systems, followed by discussions on icing challenges for UAVs and wind turbines.

This Lecture Series will be delivered by internationally recognized experts and is designed for students, researchers, and industry professionals interested in understanding icing physics and addressing related real-world challenges.

The lecture series director are Professor Serkan Özgen from METU in Türkiye and Dr. Nicolas Coudou from the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics.
